
Odis Avritt, Harvey Jones, Dave Kafoury, Wayne Petersen and Jack Viskov
are inducted into the PIL Hall of Fame during ceremonies October 19th. Also inducted, posthumously was Coach Ed Warren.
PIL Hall of Fame Inducts Five former CHS Athletes and one former Coach
On October 19, 2008 five former Cleveland High School athletes and one former coach were inducted into the P.I.L. Athletic Hall of Fame. Dwight Jaynes, a CHS graduate, was again the Master of Ceremony for the event. Retired Madison High School baseball coach Dick McClain gave the acceptance speech for the new inductees.

Jack Viskov ‘52
Jack was a star on the 1952 CHS basketball team that was co-champions of the PIL and finished in 3rd place at the state tournament. The teams style of play and white uniforms earned them the nickname the “Galloping Ghosts.” In 1952 he was voted a member the PIL All-City 1st team. Jack was a four year varsity baseball letterman and in 1951 was selected to the honorable mention All-City team at shortstop. After high school he played two years of basketball at Portland State and was the teams leading scorer both years. After college Jack played basketball for the Eastbank Saloon’s Masters basketball team. His Eastbank Saloon team won national championship in ’84, ’85, ’86, ’88, ’90, ’91, ’92, & ’93. The 1988 team won the World Championship and Jack was named the tournaments MVP.
Harvey Jones ‘55
While at CHS Harvey lettered in football, basketball and football. Harvey was the point guard on the 1955 city championship basketball team that placed third at the state tournament. In basketball he was selected to the All-City 2nd team. In baseball he was selected to the All-City 1st team as the second baseman. He went on to play four years of baseball at the University of Portland. He played three years of professional baseball for the Tri-City team. In 1962 he was a member of the Archer Blower & Pipe baseball team that won the National Amateur Baseball Championship. From 1974 thru 2001 Harvey was a Pac-10 football official and officiated in two Rose Bowl games, one Sugar Bowl, one Holiday Bowl and one East–West Shrine game
Dave Kafoury ‘62
Basketball was the sport that Dave really excelled at. In 1962 his Cleveland basketball team won the city championship and placed 3rd at the state tournament. Honors Dave received in 1962 were 1st team All-City, 2nd team All-State, and 1st team all tournament at the state tournament. Dave played three years of varsity basketball for the University of Oregon. He was head coach of the University Oregon’s freshman basketball team in 1967. After college, Dave played World Masters basketball and his team won championships in Denmark, Brazil, New Zealand & Puerto Rico.
Wayne Petersen ‘62
Wayne was another member of the 1962 CHS city championship basketball. He also had a great baseball career at CHS. In 1962 he received numerous basketball honors including 1st team All-City, 2nd team All-State and 2nd team All-Tournament at the state tournament. In baseball Wayne was selected 1st team all-City and 2nd team All-State. After high school he played basketball and baseball for Linfield College. He was a four year varsity letterman in basketball. The 1966 Linfield baseball team were NAIA National Champions. In 1966 he was 1st team All-Conference in baseball. Wayne coached for many years at Tigard High School. His 1978 baseball team finished in second place in the state and his 1974 girl’s softball team won the state championship. Wayne is past president of the Oregon High School Baseball Coaches Association.
Odis Avritt ‘63
Football, wrestling, and track were the sports that Odis participated in while at CHS. In 1962 he was selected 1st team All-City and 2nd team All-State in football. Odis was a member of the 1963 Metro Shrine football team. After high school he played football and ran track at Linfield College. In 1966 his football honors included 1st team All-Conference, 1st team All-Northwest, 1st team All-West Coast and honorable mention Little All-American. Odis is a two term past president of the Commerce-Cleveland High School Alumni Association.
Ed Warren* – CHS coach & athletic director
Mr. Warren spent part of four decades at Cleveland High School. During the period from 1937 until 1948 he coached multiple sports at Commerce High School. At times during this period he was the head coach of football, basketball, baseball, and track coach. During the period from 1949 until 1964 he held numerous positions at CHS including assistant varsity football coach, head varsity track coach, athletic director and vice principal. From 1964 until 1971 he held the position of District P.E. Supervisor for Portland Public Schools. The fitness center at CHS is named in his honor.
